Thanks for A2A, smartphone manufacturers do cheat customers in many different ways. I’ll prefer listing them in points, you can suggest if I missed out on some of them.

Playing with benchmarks. That said, benchmarks aren’t something that decide how a phone should perform. Yet, they do give a fair idea on how a phone will perform. But companies like OnePlus were recently found to be cheating and playing the benchmark numbers. And recently there are “camera benchmarks” which make no sense. DxOMark lists HTC 10 at par with Samsung S7 which is definitely not the case!

Making people believe more cores = more performance. Companies like MediaTek give 10 cores and 8 cores and make consumers attracted towards their phones. Whereas Apple’s A10 fusion chip has dual core processors and Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 has quad core processors and yet they are better than the deca core processors from Mediatek.

Making people believe more RAM = more performance. A correctly optimized phone needs at the max 4 GB RAM and 6 GB RAM is bit too much overpower! At present, any phone having 3 GB RAM works as smoothly as a 6 GB RAM phone given that other specifications are the same. Still I’m saying 4 GB RAM as a future-proofing option.

Making people believe more megapixels = better camera. Yes, its a thing of past, and with Samsung lowering down the megapixel count from 16 to 12 in S7, people do have started accepting the fact that megapixels aren’t something to be deciding factor for the picture quality. Yet, Vivo with its V5 Plus 20 MP camera and Sony also doing the same, is a bad thing. In any phone having more than 8 megapixel camera, the megapixels are useless unless you want to crop the image. For selfies, you aren’t going to crop an image and so even 5 MP (which is more than 4K resolution) camera is great.
